Finding yourself spending more time going through heaps of work emails and commuting than cuddling up with your loved one? Not ideal. Switch off your mobile for a few days and treat yourself and your man to a romantic, wintery getaway. Not sure of where to go? Don’t worry – we’ve got the lowdown on some of the hottest winter destinations:
Catch a flight to Reykjavik and get the chance to experience one of nature’s most spectacular wonders: the northern lights. There’s simply nothing more romantic than watching this mythical, elusive natural light show in the arms of your partner. Another sight worth seeing is the Blue Lagoon. Strip down to your bikini and take a dip in the steaming blue water, surrounded by the black lava fields and the stunning, barren landscape. Reykjavik is a small city, but there’s no shortage of cozy, romantic restaurants, and let’s be honest, who needs the hustle and bustle of a big city when you’re on a special getaway for two?
If you’re a serious winter lover, then we’ve got the place for you. Abisko in Lapland is almost as far north as you can get in Europe. In December and January, the sun doesn’t rise for several weeks, so the two of you won’t have any scruples about spending a few extra hours under the covers. Another benefit of the darkness is that it makes Abisko one of the best places in the world to view the northern lights. That’s pretty hard to beat if you ask us!
If you’re not a huge fan of the cold, head down to Andalucía for milder temperatures. Seville is doused in sunlight and is a pretty unusual city, with the largest historical centre in Europe encased within city walls, not only sporting majestic Mudejar architecture and narrow streets with white-washed houses, Seville also has a very exotic (and sometimes erotic) sensuality about it. The slow pace of the city and the great food makes this the perfect hotspot for romantic getaways.
Head to the beautiful central park Városligeti Műjégpálya with its giant outdoor ice rink, get your skates on and take to the ice hand-in-hand. If you’re feeling chilly, get yourself warmed up in one of Budapest’s famous thermal baths. The city is full of beautiful buildings, romantic riverside walks and a bustling nightlife – perfect for dancing the night away and then tumbling in to your bed for an encore. If you’re travelling in March, make sure you catch the Mohacs Carnival, known for its legendary parade.
There’s no mistaking Salzburg’s distinctive skyline, filled with church spires and the towers of the iconic Baroque cathedral. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped right in to a postcard. In the UNESCO World Heritage city centre, you’ll be bumping in to one spectacular sight after the other. If you’re a music-loving couple, you’ve come to the right place. The city is known for its arts scene and concert halls (it was even the birthplace of genius composer, Mozart!), so don’t miss the opportunity to snuggle up together and indulge in a first-class performance. Salzburg also has great Christmas markets, perfect for finding some last-minute gifts for your beau.
